See that big guy over there? His name is Percy and he is a Northern Pike. We have to be careful around Percy. Look at his huge teeth! He has an enormous appetite and a big belly. Don’t let that fool you though, he is a very fast swimmer. Now you see him, now you don’t!
He is a loner and cruises the neighbourhood always on the hunt. He is an interesting fellow and once he has had a meal, we can enjoy a safe visit.
NORTHERN PIKE
The Northern Pike has a long, slender, torpedo shaped body with a shovel- like snoot and a large toothy mouth. Its body is green with longitudinal rows of yellow to whitish bean shaped spots on its sides.
· Prefer cold water, weedy areas and shoals so they can ambush prey.
· Capable of “fast start” movements and can swim up to 16kph (10 mph).
· Often solitary and highly territorial.
· Aggressive and will pursue any living thing up to 1/3 of its body length to eat.
